  2.     The version of ThePier High Performance CD-ROM 
  3.     Access Program contained on this CD includes 
  4.     many improvements over previous versions.  
  5.     Unfortunately, to provide these improvements 
  6.     it was necessary to redesign the structure of 
  7.     the database used by ThePier.  This makes the 
  8.     current version of ThePier incompatible with 
  9.     the databases used by previous versions of the 
  10.     program.

  12.     If this is the first time you've purchased a 
  13.     Pier Shareware CD-ROM, these changes won't 
  14.     affect you.  You can safely return to the 
  15.     installation process and not be concerned.  If 
  16.     you own a previous version of The Pier 
  17.     Shareware CD-ROMs, please read on.

  19.     The CD-ROM you've just purchased contains 
  20.     databases for all previous versions of The 
  21.     Pier Shareware CD-ROMs.  The databases on this 
  22.     CD-ROM are compatible only with the version of 
  23.     ThePier contained on this CD-ROM.  The version 
  24.     of ThePier on this CD-ROM will not work with 
  25.     the databases from previous Pier Shareware 
  26.     CD-ROMs and versions of ThePier from previous 
  27.     CD-ROMs will not work with the databases on 
  28.     this CD-ROM.

  30.     The databases included on this CD-ROM will 
  31.     allow you to use the current version of 
  32.     ThePier to view the file lists from previous 
  33.     Pier Shareware CD-ROMs.  (If you don't own one 
  34.     of the previous CD-ROMs and you're still 
  35.     reading this, you might want to glance through 
  36.     the listings to see if you'd be interested in 
  37.     acquiring one.)

  39.     The only drawback to using the current version 
  40.     of ThePier with the databases for the previous 
  41.     versions is you can't easily extract the 
  42.     contents of archive files or use the viewers.  
  43.     These functions require access to the actual 
  44.     files and these files are, naturally, on the 
  45.     older CD-ROMs.  Unless you have multiple 
  46.     CD-ROM drives, getting at the actual files 
  47.     will require some fancy CD-ROM switching.

  49.     There are a couple of ways to work around this 
  50.     problem:

  52.     1) Install the new version of ThePier in a 
  53.        directory other than the one containing the 
  54.        older version of ThePier.  By default, 
  55.        ThePier will install to C:\THEPIER4.  This 
  56.        is a different default directory than used 
  57.        in previous versions of the program.

  59.        This leaves you with two copies of ThePier 
  60.        on your hard drive, but you'll be able to 
  61.        easily work with the older CD-ROM by just
  62.        starting the version of ThePier that came
  63.        with that CD-ROM.

  65.     2) Copy the database(s) for the older CD-ROMs
  66.        onto your hard disk.  This will consume a  
  67.        fair amount of disk space, but will allow
  68.        you to easily access the databases for all
  69.        The Pier Shareware CD-ROMs you own and will
  70.        give you access to all the functions in 
  71.        ThePier.

  73.        If you have the disk space to spare, you 
  74.        might consider copying the database for 
  75.        this CD-ROM onto your hard disk as well.
  76.        This will provide you with the best 
  77.        possible performance from ThePier.

  79.        The databases are all named according to 
  80.        the number of The Pier Shareware CD-ROM 
  81.        they are associated with.  If you want to
  82.        copy the database for The Pier Shareware 
  83.        #3, you must copy all the files from the   
  84.        directory THEPIER on this CD-ROM with the   
  85.        root filename of PIER3.

  87.        If your CD-ROM drive is drive F: and you   
  88.        installed ThePier to C:\THEPIER4, the 
  89.        following will copy the database for The
  90.        Pier Shareware #3 onto your hard disk.

  97.     If you do happen to be one of the lucky few 
  98.     who have multiple CD-ROM drives, you can 
  99.     access the databases from this CD-ROM and the 
  100.     files from a previous CD-ROM by modifying the 
  101.     Configuration settings.  Start ThePier and 
  102.     click on Configuration.  Then click on Active 
  103.     Database and select the database you want to 
  104.     use.  Next, click on Directories and change 
  105.     the drive letter for the CD-ROM to be the 
  106.     letter associated with the CD-ROM drive 
  107.     containing the older files.

  110.     We're very sorry for the inconvenience caused 
  111.     by these changes in ThePier, but we felt the 
  112.     performance benefits (searches are more than 
  113.     400% faster than with the original ThePier) 
  114.     far outweighed the disadvantages.  We hope you 
  115.     agree.

  117.     If you want to view these instructions again 
  118.     after completing the installation process, 
  119.     they are contained in the file README.OLD in 
  120.     the directory THEPIER on the CD-ROM.  This is 
  121.     a plain text file and can be viewed with any 
  122.     standard file viewer.
