The version of ThePier High Performance CD-ROM
Access Program contained on this CD includes
many improvements over previous versions.
Unfortunately, to provide these improvements
it was necessary to redesign the structure of
the database used by ThePier. This makes the
current version of ThePier incompatible with
the databases used by previous versions of the
program.
If this is the first time you've purchased a
Pier Shareware CD-ROM, these changes won't
affect you. You can safely return to the
installation process and not be concerned. If
you own a previous version of The Pier
Shareware CD-ROMs, please read on.
The CD-ROM you've just purchased contains
databases for all previous versions of The
Pier Shareware CD-ROMs. The databases on this
CD-ROM are compatible only with the version of
ThePier contained on this CD-ROM. The version
of ThePier on this CD-ROM will not work with
the databases from previous Pier Shareware
CD-ROMs and versions of ThePier from previous
CD-ROMs will not work with the databases on
this CD-ROM.
The databases included on this CD-ROM will
allow you to use the current version of
ThePier to view the file lists from previous
Pier Shareware CD-ROMs. (If you don't own one
of the previous CD-ROMs and you're still
reading this, you might want to glance through
the listings to see if you'd be interested in
acquiring one.)
The only drawback to using the current version
of ThePier with the databases for the previous
versions is you can't easily extract the
contents of archive files or use the viewers.
These functions require access to the actual
files and these files are, naturally, on the
older CD-ROMs. Unless you have multiple
CD-ROM drives, getting at the actual files
will require some fancy CD-ROM switching.
There are a couple of ways to work around this
problem:
1) Install the new version of ThePier in a
directory other than the one containing the
older version of ThePier. By default,
ThePier will install to C:\THEPIER4. This
is a different default directory than used
in previous versions of the program.
This leaves you with two copies of ThePier
on your hard drive, but you'll be able to
easily work with the older CD-ROM by just
starting the version of ThePier that came
with that CD-ROM.
2) Copy the database(s) for the older CD-ROMs
onto your hard disk. This will consume a
fair amount of disk space, but will allow
you to easily access the databases for all
The Pier Shareware CD-ROMs you own and will
give you access to all the functions in
ThePier.
If you have the disk space to spare, you
might consider copying the database for
this CD-ROM onto your hard disk as well.
This will provide you with the best
possible performance from ThePier.
The databases are all named according to
the number of The Pier Shareware CD-ROM
they are associated with. If you want to
copy the database for The Pier Shareware
#3, you must copy all the files from the
directory THEPIER on this CD-ROM with the
root filename of PIER3.
If your CD-ROM drive is drive F: and you
installed ThePier to C:\THEPIER4, the
following will copy the database for The
Pier Shareware #3 onto your hard disk.
F:
CD \THEPIER
COPY PIER3.* C:\THEPIER4
If you do happen to be one of the lucky few
who have multiple CD-ROM drives, you can
access the databases from this CD-ROM and the
files from a previous CD-ROM by modifying the
Configuration settings. Start ThePier and
click on Configuration. Then click on Active
Database and select the database you want to
use. Next, click on Directories and change
the drive letter for the CD-ROM to be the
letter associated with the CD-ROM drive
containing the older files.
We're very sorry for the inconvenience caused
by these changes in ThePier, but we felt the
performance benefits (searches are more than
400% faster than with the original ThePier)
far outweighed the disadvantages. We hope you
agree.
If you want to view these instructions again
after completing the installation process,
they are contained in the file README.OLD in
the directory THEPIER on the CD-ROM. This is
a plain text file and can be viewed with any
standard file viewer.
